Legislator Steve Stern Visits UCP Suffolk


Suffolk County Legislator Steve Stern (Huntington) recently toured United Cerebral Palsy (UCP) of Suffolk’s Adult Day Programs in Hauppauge, which included employment services (assessments, job training and coaching, supported employment and job placement), service coordination, community day habilitation, independent living, day treatment and the vocational workshop.

Legislator Stern chairs the Veterans and Seniors Committee, is vice chair of the Health and Human Services Committee and is a member of the Ways and Means and the Environment, Planning and Agriculture Committees of the Suffolk County Legislature.

While visiting an adult day program, Legislator Stern is greeted by a program participant who uses a dynavox to communicate. UCP Suffolk Executive Director Stephen H. Friedman (right) toured Legislator Stern (center) through the agency.

Legislator Lynne Nowick Visits UCP Suffolk

Suffolk County Legislator Lynne Nowick (R- Smithtown) recently toured United Cerebral Palsy (UCP) of Suffolk’s Adult Day Programs in Hauppauge, which included employment services (assessments, job training and coaching, supported employment and job placement), case management, community day habilitation, independent living, day treatment and the vocational workshop.

Legislator Nowick chairs the Parks and Recreation Committee and serves on Economic Development, Higher Education and Energy, Consumer Protection, and Labor, Workforce and Affordable Housing Committees.

UCP Suffolk operates 27 residences in Suffolk County, including several in the Smithtown area. Legislator Nowick inquired about the people living in the residences, the staffing and maintenance as she commented on how well maintained UCP keeps its homes.


Suffolk County Legislator Eli Mystal Visits UCP Suffolk

Suffolk County Legislator Eli Mystal, Chair of the Legislature’s Health and Human Services Committee, spent time with program participants in Day Habilitation while visiting United Cerebral Palsy of Suffolk (UCP). Ninety-five individuals are served daily in this program, which enables a person to become more interactive in the community and to develop a personalized plan tailored to his/her needs and interests. Basic life skills training, creative arts, computer programming and the opportunity to do volunteer work are offered in this program.

Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton’s District Office Chief Visits UCP Suffolk


While at the Hauppauge site Ms. West Levy (left) and Ms. Cooper (right) met with UCP program participant, Rolf Walter, who enjoys painting, gardening and sports.

Resi Cooper, Regional Director of the Long Island office of US Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton, recently visited United Cerebral Palsy (UCP) of Suffolk with UCP board member Colleen West Levy. They toured a number of the organization’s Adult Day Programs in Hauppauge, including Employment Services, Case Management, Community Day Habilitation/Integration, Independent Living, Day Treatment and the Vocational Workshop. They also observed several of the programs at UCP’s Children’s Center in Commack, which serves children from birth to 21 years of age who have an obvious or suspected disability in speech, intellectual, motor, social or emotional development.

While at the Hauppauge site Ms. West Levy (left) and Ms. Cooper (right) met with UCP program participant, Rolf Walter, who enjoys painting, gardening and sports. One of Mr. Walter’s paintings is on display in Suffolk County Executive Steve Levy’s office.


Assemblywoman Ginny Fields Visits UCP Suffolk


Assemblywoman Ginny Fields recently toured United Cerebral Palsy (UCP) of Suffolk's Adult Day Programs in Hauppauge with UCP Suffolk Executive Director Stephen H. Friedman. While visiting UCP's Independent Living Program, they discussed art with program participant Rolf Walter, (center) who offered to paint a lighthouse for Assemblywoman Fields, as her district includes Fire Island.

Having a long time career as a health care administrator and as a former Suffolk County Legislator who chaired the Suffolk County Legislature’s Health Committee, Assemblywoman Fields was interested in learning more about the programs and services that UCP Suffolk provides for people with disabilities. Ms. Fields has supported UCP’s plans to build a new Education and Health Center in Central Islip and looks forward to it being a part of the community.


Legislator Thomas Barraga Visits UCP Suffolk

West Islip Suffolk County Legislator Thomas Barraga recently visited United Cerebral Palsy of Suffolk and toured a number of the organization’s Adult Day Programs, including employment services (assessments, job training and coaching, supported employment and job placement) case management, community day habilitation/integration, independent living, day treatment and the vocational workshop.

Legislator Barraga was elected to the Suffolk County Legislature in the 2005 General Election. He serves on the following legislative committees: Public Safety & Information; Public Works & Transportation; Economic Development, Higher Education and Energy; and Labor, Workforce and Affordable Housing.

Prior to being elected to the Suffolk County Legislature, Mr. Barraga was a New York State Assemblyman for over 20 years.

Legislator Louis D’Amaro Visits UCP Suffolk

First term Huntington Legislator Louis D’Amaro recently took a tour of United Cerebral Palsy of Suffolk’s Adult Day Programs, which included employment services (assessments, job training and coaching, supported employment and job placement) case management, community day habilitation/integration, independent living, day treatment and the vocational workshop. He also visited UCP’s Center for Assistive Technology Services which provides evaluations and training for individuals with disabilities requiring power wheelchairs for mobility, as well as pressure mapping which assesses an individual’s pressure while sitting or lying down. Licensed therapists develop a treatment plan for individuals who are at risk or have a history of developing pressure sores.

Legislator D’Amaro chairs the Suffolk County Legislature’s Ways & Means Committee and is Vice Chair of Budget & Finance and the Environment, Planning & Agriculture Committees. He serves on the Public Works and Public Transportation Committee. Legislator D’Amaro found the tour to be “both interesting and enlightening.” According to him, “The work done a UCP is overwhelming and impressive.”

Maul Education and Health Center in Central Islip.  Tentatively scheduled to open in 2007, the center will be fully accessible and house UCP's education programs and Diagnostic and Treatment Center.
