DAY HABILITATION

UCP Suffolk’s Day Habilitation Services currently serves 101 adults with developmental disabilities in two sites (Bohemia and Hauppauge). The focus of these services is to support the efforts of the individuals to pursue an inclusive lifestyle by providing and promoting opportunities to become more involved, productive, and interactive in their communities. We provide assistance with the acquisition, retention, or improvement of self-help, socialization, and adaptive skills. Our concentration of skill acquisition includes mobility training, social skills, communication skills, housekeeping skills, safety skills, personal care skills, health care skills and money management skills. We use the participant driven team approach to develop their individualized service plan. Input is sought and received daily from the participants who choose their own activities.

In addition UCP Suffolk has always promoted a true community inclusion approach by finding opportunities for meaningful development of relationships and partnerships. People receiving services have been actively involved in volunteer projects with members of the community who are also volunteers. They have worked with food banks and food rescue, Nursing Homes, and multiple non-for profit organizations.

In an effort to raise the bar, UCP Suffolk has developed opportunities for people to expand their talents. Many of the adults have participated in the “arts” for 15 years. We have had many community art shows with one being in partnership with other community artists exhibiting at the same time. They attended the opening reception as artists not as artists with a disability. They have gifted their art for fundraising activities with the Agency as well as community endeavors. We have also assisted people to develop their talents for photography, computer internet exploration, theater and drama, continuing academic education, digital camera and cassette camera work.
